Irish Stone Axe Project: Digital Collection launched
16 April 2024The Irish Stone Axe Project: Digital Collection has been made publicly available through the Digital Repository of Ireland under the RIA's Nowlan Digitisation Grants scheme.
The digitisation of The Irish Stone Axe Project: Digital Collection was led by Gabriel Cooney MRIA, Emeritus Full Professor of Celtic Archaeology, School of Archaeology, University College Dublin, with assistance from the Discovery Programme: Centre for Archaeology and Innovation Ireland. The project was funded through the Nowlan Digitisation Grant (2022), provided by the Royal Irish Academy.
The digital collection is an image catalogue of 366 axeheads, including scaled photographs, artefact drawings and petrological thin section images of samples recorded as part of the Irish Stone Axe Project (ISAP).

About the Nowlan Digitisation Grants scheme
The Nowlan Digitisation Grants scheme aims to expand the range of digitised historical and archaeological sources available through open and free access to researchers. In line with the Royal Irish Academy’s focus on ensuring long term preservation and access to digital collections, all projects under this scheme are ingested in the Digital Repository of Ireland.
