The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Member Profile: Alan Irvine

Alan Irvine who has a long-standing research record in hereditary skin disease was admitted as a Member of the Royal Irish Academy on 24 May 2019.

Alan Irvine is professor of Dermatology at Trinity College Dublin. He has a long-standing research record in hereditary skin disease. For more than two decades he has produced consistently high-impact basic and clinical research in epithelial biology and genetic skin disease, which is reflected in an international reputation in these fields and evidenced by a substantial series of high-impact, highly cited publications, plenary lectures and awards. He holds visiting professorships to U Minnesota and U Penn, honorary professorship in Dundee University and is director of the International Eczema Council. He is also a scientific advisor to several charities, including the Irish Skin Foundation and British Skin Foundation.
