The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

Member Profile: Isabel Torres

Professor Isabel Torres, an expert in Spanish Golden Age Literature was admitted as a Member of the Royal Irish Academy on 24 May 2019.

Isabel Torres is professor of Spanish Golden-Age Literature at Queen’s University Belfast and the outgoing president of the Association of Hispanists of Great Britain and Ireland. She is an international corresponding member of the Royal Spanish Academy, perhaps the highest form of recognition for any Hispanist. She has published extensively on the poetry of the Spanish Golden Age, and holds a Queen’s University Teaching Award.
