Prints by David Rooney
Richard O’Carroll (1876–1916), a bricklayer born in Dublin’s north inner city, was general secretary of the bricklayers’ trade union and leader of the Labour Party members of Dublin Corporation. A lieutenant in the Irish Volunteers, he was captured and disarmed on Camden Street by British troops, whose commander, Captain John Bowen-Colthurst, then shot him in the chest. He died in hospital nine days later on 5 May.
