The Cunningham Medal is the Academy’s premier award and dates back to 1796. It is awarded every three years in recognition of “outstanding contributions to scholarship and the objectives of the Academy”.

The Royal Irish Academy’s Charlemont Grants Scheme was established in 2007 (formerly known as the RIA Mobility Grant Scheme). This scheme is an international research scheme awarded to outstanding early career researchers in the humanities, social sciences and sciences.

All applications should demonstrate that Academy funds are sought for a clearly defined, discrete piece of collaborative research, which will have an identifiable outcome on completion of the Academy-funded component of the project.

Those successful for this grant scheme will be notified of the outcome via emailed letter. Following this, the drawdown process for the grant will commence.

The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.
