We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

The Finnish Higher Education Reform Towards an Innovative Society

The 2017 Leaders in Higher Education Address will be delivered by Professor Tuula Teeri, President-Elect of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences and the first President of Aalto University, Finland

Thursday 16 November 18:30.

The Minister of State for Higher Education, Mary Mitchell O'Connor, TD, will deliver the opening remarks.

In her address, Professor Teeri will discuss her experience of managing large-scale reform in the Finnish higher education system, offering insights at a time when the Irish higher education system is also undergoing considerable change including the introduction of Technological Universities.

Professor Teeri oversaw the formation of Aalto University from the merger of the Helsinki School of Economics, the Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Arts and Design, Helsinki. Established as a priority project in the reform of the Finnish higher education system, Aalto University's mission is to build a better and stronger Finland. It is a societally embedded research university prioritising cross-disciplinary research projects and learning in practice.
