THE ROYAL IRISH ACADEMY IS IRELAND'S LEADING BODY OF EXPERTS IN THE SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES

The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann champions research. We identify and recognise Ireland’s world class researchers. We support scholarship and promote awareness of how science and the humanities enrich our lives and benefit society. We believe that good research needs to be promoted, sustained and communicated. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest academic honour in Ireland.

RIA Joint Letter with the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Learned Society of Wales

21 March 2019

The Academy has collaborated with the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Learned Society of Wales to draw attention to shared issues between the devolved administrations.

The academies have called for meaningful engagement between the British Government and Devolved Administrations on the policy and priorities of research and innovation across the UK. They are advocating for stronger arrangements involving UK Research and Innovation to take full account of the needs and priorities of the devolved nations.

The letter emphasises that replacing EU sources of funding will be vital to the nations represented and to their respective universities. It recognises the importance of the proposed UK Shared Prosperity Fund to deliver prosperity throughout the UK and insists that its operation should respect the devolution settlement and be no less in value than current EU Regional and Social funding.

The letter is available to download here.
