This review of the geology of a classic area in the west of Ireland includes chapters on Dalradian stratigraphy and structure, syn-deformational magmatism, metamorphism, geochronology, and relationships with younger intrusions and cover rocks. It is accompanied by five colour-printed plates including a geological map of Connemara and geological cross sections and maps of Styne Head and Errismore, and gives accounts of other located exposures.

Bernard E. Leake

Bernard Elgey Leake BSc PhD (Liverpool) DSc (Bristol) DSc (Glasgow) FRSE FGS graduated in Geology in 1952 and started life-long research on the geology of Connemara, metamorphic and igneous petrology; amphiboles; 170 publications. Lecturer–Reader in Bristol University 1957–74; Professor of Geology & Honorary Keeper of the Geological Collections, Hunterian Museum, Glasgow University 1974–97 now Emeritus. Lyell Medal 1977;  Research Fellowships: Leverhulme, 1955–7 Liverpool and 2000–2 Cardiff; Gledden 1986 Western Australia; Erskine 1999 Canterbury, New Zealand.  President Geological Society 1986–88; Mineralogical Society 1998–99.  Biographer JW Gregory FRS. Since 1997 Honorary Research Fellow, Cardiff University.

P.W. Geoffrey Tanner is an Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Geographical and Earth Sciences at the University of Glasgow. He is joint author of Geology of the Dalradian and Associated Rocks of Connemara, Western Ireland (1994).
